Schnabel's "Basquiat"

Directed by Julian Schnabel (an interesting painter & artsy director)

Really cool concept/images of Basquiat's studio (also great hairstyles).

A hugely famous cast, including Benicio del Toro (who I was confusing with some famous director but is actually mainly a really well-known actor), David Bowie, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, the list goes on.

It was gratifying to see such an accomplished (and attractive) cast, and some of the characters were presented as fairly colorful and interesting, if not quite sympathetic, but it was overall a pretty disappointing production. None of the characters, most notably Basquiat himself, were quite developed enough to be truly captivating. The movie only showed a brief span of B's career, or else the entire span, but skipping through a lot of steps and really compressing it. It was very depressing, showing the downsides to artistic fame and emphasizing B's drug habit.

Just some of my observations & things I like or dislike :)

I love the necklace made out of different tapes. Tape is one of those common art/craft/hardware/household supplies that can be really multi-functional and exciting.

I am intrigued by this. Do people actually wear these under maxi dresses? I'm trying to figure out if there's any practicality to it. It is pretty cool looking through, very ghostly or 19th century.

This and other backless pieces are fun, but really frustrating in that you can't wear a bra with them.

The things that I kind of like just seem really impractical to actually wear.This one is kind of ugly but reminds me of chainmail.

METROPOLIS at Mass MoCA

Adam drove me and Andrew M. up to North Adams (aka middle of nowhere, Mass) on Friday and we went through the museum before seeing this:

Even though we were disappointed to be met with a three-man ensemble, rather than the orchestra we had expected, the ensemble turned out to be pretty incredible. Chimes, gongs, drums, and a synthesizer... okay at least that's what I think there was, with my embarassingly limited musical knowledge. Seeing the movie on a large screen, with all the restored bits, was pretty exciting in itself. It did go on pretty long, though.

I was pretty excited to see the huge Sol LeWitt retrospective at the museum:

Three floors, starting with oldest to most recent, from bottom to top. It was like walking through a maze or wonderland of LeWitt walls, pretty incredible. There were at least two videos describing the process and interviewing the artists, and it was really nostalgic to see Tak and John on the screen.

Especially nostalgic were the scribble drawings like this one, below:
