MBM continued

Because I am in awe right now.

This one is called "Dying Swan" -- very interesting... absurd...

Mary Beth McKenzie

I found out about this artist from an email advertising a painting workshop she is giving.
Exploring her work more and then I will publish some of my thoughts...

(holy Mackerel -- I am dumbfounded by this one; if only I knew how to make it my desktop background, unfortunately I am technologically challenged & my computer is being a butt)

POETS & POEMS

I have been realizing, thanks to OKCupid, that I have a very hard time keeping track of poets and poems that I like. I need to make a list, to help me out with that.

1. Alessandra Lynch (visited my high school as a guest poet; read to us; did a workshop with us)

2. Billy Collins (poet laureate?)

3. Langston Hughes (1902 - 1967)

4. e.e. cummings

5. Emily Dickinson

6. Margaret Atwood

7. Robert Creeley

8. Stephen Dunn

9. T.S. Eliot

10. Robert Frost

11. Allen Ginsburg (1926 - 1997)

Man sacrifices his health in order to make money.
Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.
And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;
the result being that he does not live in the present or the future;
he lives as if he is never going to die, and then he dies having never really lived.

Morning

It's pouring rain, I slept really badly, and there was a girl crying when I walked into this coffee shop.
At least the owner acknowledged me in a friendly way that might signify some kind of recognition, maybe even a vague apology for the way she treated me when I hung my art here.
In any case, I'm going to write a story about rocks.

Twelfth Night

I saw the first half of a production with my parents tonight, and I couldn't help but notice carefully these quotes:

For such as I am all true lovers are,
Unstaid and skittish in all motions else,
Save in the constant image of the creature
That is beloved.

A blank, my lord. She never told her love,
But let concealment, like a worm i' the bud,
Feed on her damask cheek: she pined in thought,
And with a green and yellow melancholy
She sat like patience on a monument, 1015
Smiling at grief. Was not this love indeed?

Stamps

I keep losing this blog / forgetting to write in it.
Now I'm trying to revive it.

I'm writing something about my stamp collection, currently.

Schnabel's "Basquiat"

Directed by Julian Schnabel (an interesting painter & artsy director)

painting by Schnabel

Really cool concept/images of Basquiat's studio (also great hairstyles).

A hugely famous cast, including Benicio del Toro (who I was confusing with some famous director but is actually mainly a really well-known actor), David Bowie, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, the list goes on.

It was gratifying to see such an accomplished (and attractive) cast, and some of the characters were presented as fairly colorful and interesting, if not quite sympathetic, but it was overall a pretty disappointing production. None of the characters, most notably Basquiat himself, were quite developed enough to be truly captivating. The movie only showed a brief span of B's career, or else the entire span, but skipping through a lot of steps and really compressing it. It was very depressing, showing the downsides to artistic fame and emphasizing B's drug habit.

Afraid of Everyone

These are the lyrics

So I guess it's going to be 3d, and filming starts in August... and will supposedly come out sometime in 2012...

Urban Outfitters fall catalog

Just some of my observations & things I like or dislike :)

I love the necklace made out of different tapes. Tape is one of those common art/craft/hardware/household supplies that can be really multi-functional and exciting.

I am intrigued by this. Do people actually wear these under maxi dresses? I'm trying to figure out if there's any practicality to it. It is pretty cool looking through, very ghostly or 19th century.

This and other backless pieces are fun, but really frustrating in that you can't wear a bra with them.

The things that I kind of like just seem really impractical to actually wear. This one is kind of ugly but reminds me of chainmail.

Artists in their Studios: Hannah Höch

Hannah Höch in her studio, 1976
from The Photomontages of Hannah Höch

Alexander McQueen at the Met Museum

I MISSED SEEING THIS =( by about a week.

Oh my gosh:

This video (at the bottom of the page) will blow your mind.

METROPOLIS at Mass MoCA

Adam drove me and Andrew M. up to North Adams (aka middle of nowhere, Mass) on Friday and we went through the museum before seeing this:

Even though we were disappointed to be met with a three-man ensemble, rather than the orchestra we had expected, the ensemble turned out to be pretty incredible. Chimes, gongs, drums, and a synthesizer... okay at least that's what I think there was, with my embarassingly limited musical knowledge. Seeing the movie on a large screen, with all the restored bits, was pretty exciting in itself. It did go on pretty long, though.

I was pretty excited to see the huge Sol LeWitt retrospective at the museum:

Three floors, starting with oldest to most recent, from bottom to top. It was like walking through a maze or wonderland of LeWitt walls, pretty incredible. There were at least two videos describing the process and interviewing the artists, and it was really nostalgic to see Tak and John on the screen.

Especially nostalgic were the scribble drawings like this one, below:

And I really liked this piece, specifically:
